Dr. Berna Ravitz enjoyed a successful 34 year tenure on the front lines of K-12 education, first as a teacher, and then by founding and leading highly diverse and unique educational programs and organizations in both urban and suburban settings. She has excelled in creating cohesive learning communities and safe environments in which children flourish and parents eagerly participate. Her strengths include the abilities to formulate solutions for families with children who act out, underperform or don’t fit within educational norms and to recognize, understand and address the problems facing multi-ethnic populations.

Berna received many honors throughout a long and rewarding career including an International Fulbright Principal Exchange, Michigan’s Elementary/Middle Outstanding Practicing Principal, and the National Distinguished Principal Award. Berna has a BA in psychology, an MA in education and a Doctorate in educational leadership and curriculum. She has worked as an Executive Coach and most recently as a founder of Simply Smart Kids, a program designed to help parents raise smarter kids. Berna is trained in the Gottman method of Couples and Family therapy and brings all those years of working with children and families to her practice of coaching.

DR. BERNA RAVITZ’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS through the eyes of the educational community (excerpted from Distinguished Principal Award Application)
“…is a visionary, always supplying the canvas, drawing the background and allowing others to paint the picture; creates a working environment where others feel valued; her willingness to roll up her sleeves and work with the team creates a cooperative learning community; willing to think outside the box when answers don’t seem obvious; a natural at getting others to ‘get on board’.

My certification in Life Coaching and training in The Gottman Couples Therapy method has enabled me to wed a long career in nursing, medical education and the law with a passion to help people overcome life’s obstacles. My training, experience, life skills and dedication give me a broad based, unique skill set to effectively help you identify the issues that block you and find new and innovative ways of reaching your goals and realizing your dreams. I am excited to apply the tools I’ve learned as a springboard for you to reach new heights individually, as parents or as a couple.

My professional career began as a nurse educator and medical researcher, followed by a stint as Director of Perinatal Education at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. I have worked as a health care advocate for the past 20 years, with an emphasis in oncology through my web based Cancer Lifeline Specialists. I am also a certified Nurse Advocate and Legal Nurse Consultant. I am a contributor to or author of several legal books and articles and I have lectured on various medical and legal issues. Most of my professional life has been engaged in discovering new and innovative ways to solve problems and inspire people to overcome some of life’s most difficult circumstances.

My personal life experience, encompassing many passions and interests, has been exceedingly rich but not without the need to confront and usually conquer the largely unforeseen troubles we all encounter from time to time. I have successfully navigated the ups and downs of life, including loss and bereavement and surviving cancer. I am a mother and grandmother with all the joy and challenges those roles entail.

We all face the many life transitions that force us to reevaluate and find new paths to success and happiness. I can be the motivating force, the inspiration to allow you to find your passion and success. Those hidden dreams & unfulfilled wishes can be realized. Be the person you want to be!

Testimonials

I wanted to attest to Wendy Fields skill and compassion as a bereavement coach. When I think of Wendy, I think of strength, compassion and positivity; and she's a wonderful listener. Tragically I lost my husband a few years ago. It was an unimaginable loss and I needed support. My family was wonderful but on a personal level I needed someone to help me find my own, new path. I was overwhelmed with what my life would and wouldn’t be. Wendy was available anytime I needed to talk. Initially she helped me with everything, from the arrangements for the funeral to just getting out of bed. She was both a lifeline and a Life Coach. Wendy listened to my stories, gave me the space to grieve and motivated me to find my inner strength. She helped me come out of the fog and see that I had a full, productive life ahead of me. Wendy is simply the best, most compassionate, kind, wise and insightful person to trust with your life issues. Her compassion runs deep and her knowledge is remarkable. She instilled a deep sense of purpose and gave me the incentive to trust my own judgment. She really magnified my potential and I am moving forward in a very positive way. I am happy to support and recommend Wendy’s coaching skills to anyone going through the trials and tribulations of life. She’s a great shoulder to lean on.

When I think of Berna Ravitz I think of strength, positivity, moving forward and facing my fears. She has helped me through so many life changing experiences involving divorce, child rearing and my own personal goals. Berna never minced words, she consistently pushed me to believe in myself and speak up for my needs and desires. I learned that I deserved both. With Berna’s help I was able to reflect on my past experiences as a child and a wife and honestly look at my future in a new way. I am now with a man who has become my best friend and I enjoy life with him so much. I finally believe that I deserve someone so wonderful.

I have been fortunate to know Wendy Fields for a long time. She has been the person, the coach, who helped me through my own difficult tragedy and sorrow. Several years ago, I was diagnosed with a significant hearing loss; over 80% of my hearing was gone. I required multiple appointments and ultimately surgical intervention, which included Cochlear Implants. At the time this was a new, experimental procedure. Loosing my hearing had a profound impact on my life both personally & professionally. Everything changed and I needed help adjusting and finding a new path. Wendy helped me deal with the numerous adjustments of daily living. She coached me through the many challenges I suddenly faced. Emotionally I felt vulnerable and fearful of what my new life would look like. I had to make significant adjustments and professionally I had to leave a job that I loved. Wendy was always there helping to keep my goals in focus. She also walked me through the medical possibilities and helped me understand the pluses and minuses of the various choices I faced. In essence I can honestly say that she was the sounding board, the patient listener and the person who always had my back. She sat with me at many of my appointments to interpret what the doctor was saying and helped me decide what I needed to do to help myself. Her coaching skills helped me clarify the issues and find the right path for me. She is a born “Life Coach” and a great listener. She hears not only what you say but also what you feel. Her support and coaching was pivotal to my success.

As the grandfather of a precocious five- year old, I struggled to connect with a tough nut who largely ignored me, an experience at odds with the enduring closeness I enjoyed from birth with her father and my other kids. After a couple of years of frustration, I finally took Berna’s advice: stop making the first move and let her come to you. When she does, be gracious and positively reinforce her behavior without being effusive. Over time, as she grew up a little, my patience has been rewarded with an organically improving relationship. Simply put, Berna Ravitz knows kids, what makes them tick and how adults can make them feel safe, confident, secure and loved. Her advice is usually so fundamental (while at the same time unique) that it begs the question, “Why didn’t I think of that?” The answer, of course, is that we are often too close to the trees to see the forest. Her wisdom can’t be acquired from books; it comes from decades of teaching, running schools and being a parent and grandparent. There is literally no situation in a school setting that she has not confronted in one form or another.

I have known Wendy Fields for about 20 years. As you might imagine, a lot has happened in my life during that time. I have graduated from school, made two major career changes, gotten married, and had children. Those are the obvious highlights, but over those years, there have also been difficult times. I have lost a dear friend to cancer, struggled with challenging family dynamics, and dealt with catastrophic illnesses in my wife and our families. Throughout all of these events, Wendy has been a reliable source of support and a seemingly inexhaustible fount of wisdom and guidance. During the times of major change, Wendy was a voice of reason and reassurance, a novel thoughtful perspective, a cheerleader, and an unflinching believer in my strengths, potential, and capabilities. In the tough times, whether I was in need of an ear to listen, a hand to help, or a shoulder to lean on; Wendy has always had these things at the ready. She is able to sense what someone really needs - even when they don't know themselves what that is or are unable / unwilling to ask. Wendy has helped guide me through various situations, questions, and choices in my life. I have also witnessed firsthand the limitless reservoirs of her strength, generosity, and pure devotion as she unfailingly supported other people and their families in their fights against fatal diseases.

It is hard to pigeon hole her because she is so many things: friend, guide, mentor, trusted confidant, therapist, and motivator. Importantly, Wendy has a gift for seeing in others, what they do not yet see in themselves. I cannot think of a more useful skill for someone seeking to help motivate, inspire, and guide others. I have no doubt in her ability to help others in their own personal journeys, through the ups and downs as well as around the blind corners that constitute life.

Berna Ravitz is a born natural coach. It is a calling for her, not a job.
I cannot say there was this one particular day where I was struggling with a problem and I said to myself: ENOUGH! Today I am going to commit to transformation. Then I booked a session with Berna Ravitz. What I can say, is that there were many moments that led up to the decision, like "OK, what shall I do now? What is my next move? How do I level up and make the next move? What does it look like, feel like? Who do I talk to?"
As a women, wife, friend, daughter, sister, aunt, being a fixer and a sole proprietor business owner it can be hard and lonely when it comes time to make decisions. I was in a muddled place, trying to figure out the right direction in which to go with a lot of big and small ideas about moving forward. I was feeling unsure and a little overwhelmed. OK, a lot overwhelmed! With Berna’s gentle but firm guidance. I learned that I was my own worst enemy.

Berna supported me in my effort to “get out of my own way!” Friends and family are often around to listen and solve your problems; people love to give advice. Berna’s approach to “advice” is her incisive questions which set you on a course for setting the goals that are right for you and supports you on the path to actually fulfilling your own dreams. Berna was available 24/7 in times of crisis.

I have had some pivotal moments in both my business and personal life and owe a debt of gratitude to Berna Ravitz for being there for me. A few reasons why should you do ‘the work’ with Berna:

  • Gives you clear advice/ guidance while listening and reading between the lines
  • Offers a safe and comfortable ‘place” during your chats
  • She supports you in realizing your goals and dreams and helps you along the path
  • She is truly a creative problem solver always offering alternatives not even on your radar screen
  • She not only thinks outside the box, she creates the box
  • SHE CARES, IS PASSIONATE AND EMPATHETIC

I can, without a doubt, recommend Berna. Commit to it, do the work and I can attest that this is something you will not regret.

I am delighted to write this testimonial on behalf of Wendy Fields. I first became acquainted with Wendy’s work about 10 years ago. She was involved helping a good friend who was deal with his terminal illness. I witnessed Wendy’s remarkable abilities first hand. When most were wringing our hands, not knowing how to help, Wendy demonstrated her vast knowledge and seemingly unlimited skill set. She coached him through the most painful issues in life. She was his shoulder to lean on, his source for medical information and his source of strength. His toughest decisions were made easier with Wendy’s help. I wasn’t aware of what exactly a Life Coach is and boy did I quickly learn. I witnessed first hand the value of a Life Coach.

Wendy’s life coaching skills seem limitless. She has “coached” me through many complicated life issues. In today’s world we are all bombarded with complicated, sometimes painful conflicts and issues. Having someone with Wendy’s skills just makes life a little easier.

In summary, I can say honestly and without reservation that Wendy Fields is the most giving, caring, selfless, generous and knowledgeable person- I would trust her with my life- and at 71 years of age that’s saying something.

Berna Ravitz is fantastic. I have been the lucky recipient of her coaching these past 6 years as my kids grew from being babies and toddlers to the lovely (almost always) youngsters of today. Berna taught me the difference between natural consequences and punishment when dealing with my kids’ behaviors. This was also about teaching them to take responsibility for their own actions which makes us all happier! We have been fortunate to have Berna in our lives these past years…and it is reassuring to know that she is just a phone call or email away.

Working with Wendy Fields feels like talking to someone who instantly has known you your whole life, and immediately feels invested in your specific set of challenges and problems. She is at the same time motherly, authorative, proactive and friendly. She knows how to make you feel heard and guide you through difficult choices, difficult situations and even more difficult mental shifts. “Just call Wendy” becomes the mantras home anytime there is a problem without a clear solution and I’m always so grateful she’s always available to pick up those calls and help me navigate life with my husband, with my family, with my friends, and most importantly, with myself.

I was at a place in my life full of anxiety, fear, and worry. I was drinking too much to cope. I then decided to reach out to Berna Ravitz for help through her life coaching. What a wonderful encounter, meeting Berna. She has taught me to love myself and to understand that all of us struggle with issues. We are not alone and help is there if we are willing to reach out and within. I am alcohol free now for 6 months, and although it has been challenging, I have found other ways to cope with my stress. Thank you for your knowledge, experience, and guidance Berna!

As I turned into a 50-year-old woman, my body and mind turned on me. The stresses in my life together with menopause and all of its effects caused a severe depression that took over my life.

Fortunately I knew Wendy Fields, who with her knowledge, leadership and innate sense of sincere care, guided me back on my feet and into life again. Wendy’s skills in researching and matching me with the perfect doctor were just the first step in her wellness plan. She gently but persistently guided me through a difficult but necessary process of regaining my stability and learning to deal with the stresses in my life as well as my depression. She complimented my professional medical care with life coaching skills. One of those stresses was my 15-year marriage with inevitable family issues. Wendy worked tirelessly with both my husband and me to help us understand one another at this stage of our lives and how he could be a supportive partner as I recovered from depression. She continues to coach us separately and together as we heal, adjust and move forward with our lives.

Wendy’s communication talents combined with her practical medical and legal skills paired with her vast life experiences and innate strength of character, creates what I call a “Super Life Coach”. As she works with the whole person and all aspects of their life, Wendy is able to guide and assist in not only resolving current life conflicts, but creating the life you desire as a connected, well-rounded individual full of wellbeing, balance, stability and joy.

On numerous occasions Berna Ravitz has helped me sort out issues with my “adult” kids that I could not see clearly. So often I have turned to her for advice and lengthy conversations that led me down a new and clearer path to understanding ‘what was really going on”. Her experience, based on years in education, her doctoral research, and her leadership in a company helping parents and kids, has been invaluable. This professional approach to altering family dynamics is refreshing and has made an enormous difference in our family and the lives of others who I have sent to Berna.

Over the past 30 years that I have known Wendy, she has been a guiding influence in various stages of our family’s life. As our teenage children grew into adults, the wisdom and thoughts she shared with me have been beneficial in helping with our three daughter’s choice of college, careers and partners in life. Additionally, there have been medical life threatening challenges for my husband that without Wendy’s knowledge and contacts he may not be with us today. We also have been fortunate to recommend Wendy to others that have benefited from her counsel and guidance.

We owe an undeniable gratitude to Wendy for the incredible thoughts and friendship that has developed over the years. With her counsel I’m sure our family is in a more stable and serene place in life as we wander through the many challenges life presents us at every turn. Knowing Wendy is always there for us gives us the peace and knowledge we can face them and go forward. We can never tell her enough how we appreciate her at so many levels. Wendy is our friend for life.

Life is filled with transitions and I needed a life coach to help me move through retirement and find a new path. My professional career spanned over 30 years and I was leaning toward retirement when my husband died suddenly. I was unexpectedly without a partner or a job. Suddenly I was thrust into a completely new situation and I was filled with anxiety and trepidation. I needed help. I considered seeing a traditional therapist but decided to try a Life Coach instead. I was very grateful to have Wendy Fields available to help me formulate a new life plan. Wendy is a catalyst for change. She helps uncover the truths you sometimes want to avoid while helping to formulate an action plan to move forward. There are no barriers with Wendy- she encourages you to dig deep and determine what issues are holding you back. This was essential and allowed me to move forward with definite plans for success. Wendy’s support is always there, sometimes in subtle ways and other times it’s like a big warm hug- celebrating your effort and progress. We all need a Wendy in our corner.
